69th Georgia 4-H Congress

July 18, 2011 4-H'ers from across Georgia convened in Atlanta for the 69th annual Georgia 4-H Congress. Congress is a culmination of achievements of the 2011 4-H year. In addition to recognizing winners in a multitude of areas, project competition is held in 4-H projects as well as Leadership in Action. 4-H'ers enjoy the opportunity Thursday to visit donors and supporters and tour locations throughout Atlanta.

Tuesday Congress opened with thrity-one 4-H'ers receiving scholarships to continue their educations. Over $28,000 in funds were awarded to graduating seniors and college students representating every corner of the state. Nita Waters, volunteer from Floyd County was also honored as the outstanding volunteer of the year.

Tuesday evening during the Georgia 4-H Foundation Leadership Banquet, eight 4-H'ers were recognized for their work as community leaders. Morgan Bowen and Crystal Buckingham earned state honors for their projects and became now Master 4-H'ers. Danny Dorminy, Stephanie Hill and Crystal Buckingham each received $500 grants to support their community projects.

Wednesday night capped of project competition with a Night at Six Flags. After a picnic in the parking and an evening of rides, 250 youth gathered in the Crystal Pistol to hear the results from the 2011 State Competition. Forty-eight high schol age youth earned state winner honors.

Wednesday Competition concluded with a Night at Six Flags sponsored by Chevron. All delegates joined in the Crystal Pistol for announcement of winners and 48 4-H'ers became brand new Master 4-H'ers.

68th Annual Georgia 4-H Congress

It's the first day of the 68th Georgia 4-H Congress. Honoring 36 scholarship winners and 12 volunteers during the Opening Assembly, the day continued with the announcement of the 2010 Leadership in Action winners, Chelsea Restrepro from Bacon County and Helen Clark from Camden County. The Leadership Banquet included recogntion of the 2010 4-H Center Leadership and honoring Brock Hufstetler with the 2010 William H Sutton Scholarship.

After an day of presentations and portfolio discussions, nine UGA buses rolled towards Six Flags. With screams on the roller coasters and laughter at the games, 255 youth piled into the Crystal Pistol with their leaders. 48 victorious youth celebrated at this year's Annoucement of Winners

The 67th Georgia 4-H Congress kicked off this afternoon with more than 35 youth receiving scholarships and 6 outstanding volunteers being recognized for outstanding achievement. The Leadership Banquet included the presentation of the Sutton Scholarship to Mr Joshua Akins, President of Georgia 4-H and recognition of Madison County's John Scott and Forysth County's Mary Singleton as our state Leadership in Action program. Katie Thigpen of Charlton County, Ashleigh Day of Peach County, and Grace Whipple of Henry County received funding from donor Jayson Dukes to extend their project.

Yesterdays nerves were settled with the completion of presentations and discussions with portfolio judges. You'll find in last night's slide show, great shots of 4-H'ers at play at Six Flags and the announcements of winners. When the UGA buses rolled back to the Crowne Plaza Ravinia last night, 48 state winners were ecstatic with their success.
